Local travelling comedy club, The Comedy Commune, set up and run by Lennox comedian John Peacock, is all set for another big year of bringing the laughs to Lennox and beyond. The Comedy Commune is a local business based in Lennox Head. They curate and promote stand-up comedy events.
John started The Comedy Commune as a means to provide opportunities for up and coming stand-up comedians. The goal was to allow the chance to perform on stage in front of a paying audience alongside professional comics.
From the very first gig upstairs at the pub, where he expected 30 people, set the room optimistically for 80 and finally started turning people away at 138, The Comedy Commune has been a raging success, consistently selling out.
‘2021 looks huge for us,’ John said. ‘Our home town gig at the pub is set to start up again, we’re constantly seeking out new venues and our rooms in Ballina are all still selling out. In fact the gig at Two Hands Kitchen in Ballina has sold out every performance in the four months it’s been running. We’re looking for a regular open mic room and our open mic competition which kicks off in March is gaining huge traction.’
Starting in March, The Comedy Commune will be holding an open mic competition at Seven Mile Brewing in Ballina. It will be held over five monthly heats with a final in August. Mandy Nolan is already booked to headline the final. Mandy is also providing 2 hours mentoring/writing as one of the prizes for the winner. There’s cash prizes and a paid spot at an upcoming Comedy Commune gig also in the prize pool.
Local businesses and venues with an interest in supporting the local arts and creative pursuits are encouraged to contact John. There are sponsorship opportunities available for the open mic competition and the chance to host a quality comedy event at your venue.
