Relay For Life

Ballina Shire Relay For Life will be back at Alstonville Showgrounds on Saturday 4t May 2019 from 12pm. This year’s theme of Relay is All Colours, All Cancers.

“We want the track to be a sea of colour- whether you dress in rainbow or choose the colour that represent the cancer(s) that have impacted your life is up to you,” explained Hannah Nairne, Community Relations Coordinator Cancer Council.

What is Relay For Life? Relay For Life is a fun and moving experience with live music, games, kids’ activities, food trucks, health hub, overnight camping, plus much more. Most importantly it raises awareness in the community of the impact of cancer and raises vital funds to support Cancer Council’s research, information and support services to ensure no one faces cancer alone.

Thanks to the efforts of the Ballina Shire over the past few years the local Cancer Council can continue to support our Ballina and Lismore Transport to Treatment Services. These services aim to fill gaps in current transport services to meet the needs of people who are affected by cancer that are transport disadvantaged. This financial year we have made 220 trips, transporting over 127 people, travelling over 12,500 kms spanning the Northern Rivers and Far North Coast. Cancer Council launched the new Ballina Transport to Treatment service in 2019, with special thanks to Dry July funding the project. The Ballina service will assist people from the local area, spanning to Byron Bay, Alstonville and Wardell, to get to their treatment where there are no other options. The service will be operated by local volunteers who have kindly donated their time to transport patients.

This year Relay will begin at 12pm with fun for the whole family! Don’t worry parents it won’t break the budget, there will be free activities plus a whole kid’s area for a one-off small donation! There will be a Jumping Castle, Laser Tag, Lawn Games, Tennis plus so much more. For the adults we will have stage entertainment, Cancer Council information stalls and plenty of food to go around. The official Opening Ceremony will be at 2pm to kick start the Relay, followed by the ‘Survivor and Carer Lap of Honour, and Afternoon Tea’. If you are a survivor or carer and would like to be a part of this, please come along to the event, Saturday 4th May before 1.30pm.
