We don’t normally talk much about motorbikes in this segment, but this February the Hogs For The Homeless crew spent a couple of days in Lennox. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to take a bit of a look at what they where riding and see what was going on.
The leader of the the pack was Brad ‘Freddy’ Fittler who said that as a father, it made him feel sick that there were nearly 47,000 homeless young people under the age of 25 in Australia. In 2012 he took the idea of touring regional centres of NSW and raising funds and awareness to the National Rugby League and various sponsors. Everyone was on board in no time. He also gathered up a bunch of former greats and off they went, riding into the sunset on brand new Harley Davidson bikes (or Hogs as they are affectionately known).
The 2018 version saw Freddy, Nathan Hindmarsh, Danny Buderus, Steve Menzies and Ian Schubert make up the core group and various other big names tagged along on different legs of the journey, including my childhood idol Graham ‘Wombat’ Eadie making an appearance here in Lennox.
The bikes they where riding were all current model Harley-Davidsons on loan from Northern Beaches Harley-Davidson. When asked ‘What’s the best thing about the ride?’ Freddy replied ‘Just cruising and the attention we get, everyone young and old loves the bikes’. Steve ‘Beaver’ Menzies tells us he may be buying his, providing he gets it past his wife. Time will tell. The guys tend to prefer the Touring and CVO models as they are designed to travel in comfort and have storage room for your toothbrush and a change of clothes. The stand out for me was the XGS Series black Harley with the matching surfboard, nice touch.
