Peter Fowler is a rare find: a local boy who was born locally and grew up in Alstonville, studied at Southern Cross University and, apart from a short stint on the Gold Coast, has pursued a (very successful) professional career here.
His father was a maths and computing teacher which influenced Peter’s love of numbers and problem solving, but according to Peter, it was the discussions with family and friends who made him decide to pursue a career in business and finance.
‘I remember sitting at the dining room table and listening to conversations about business and economics and shares. It interested me from a very young age,’ he says.
‘Though for a while I thought I might be a pharmacist, but I wanted to stay here and study, and I wanted security of employment, so I chose accounting.’
Unlike many young people, Peter had no dream to live in the big smoke.
While he continues to travel extensively and loves visiting other countries and cities, he says he will always return to the peace and beauty of the coast.
‘I love the beach, the water, and the rural coastal lifestyle,’ he says.
So he decided to remain here and study a Bachelor of Accounting, followed by the CPA qualification and an MBA.
And it didn’t take long before he began to distinguish himself in the profession.
Firstly, at 25, Peter became a Partner at Ballina firm Collins Hume, which offers accounting and business advisory services to business.
For two years running he won CPA Australia’s Top 40 Under 40 Business Leaders, and in addition to this he is one a few professionals in the area to gain the Specialist Self Managed Superannuation Funds qualification which enables him to offer high level strategic advice on Self Managed Superannuation Funds.
To top it off, this year Collins Hume won the Australian Small Business Champion Awards, one of several awards it has attained over the years.
But none of this is accidental, of course. Peter is very focused on growing and strengthening the professionalism of the Collins Hume practice.
‘We work on the business, but we practice what we preach. So we work smart, not hard, and we ensure that we maintain a healthy work life balance. That’s exactly what we want to give to our clients,’ he says.
Hobbies: Surfing, golf, paddleboarding, travelling, spending time with my wife.
Best thing about your work: Helping people, both personally and financially, to create the life they want and take control. That looks different for everyone. My motto is ‘Business by design, not by default.’
Worst Thing: Keeping up to date with changes in legislation and technology. Our industry and business in general is faced with constant evolution and it can be a challenge to keep a breast of this constant change.
Work/Life Philosophy: Work to live, don’t live to work.
