Protest To Save Koala Habitat

More than 100 people gathered at the Ballina RSL last month to protest the route chosen by Roads & Maritime Services for the Ballina to Wardell Pacific Highway Upgrade, which will destroy the habitat of a population of koalas.

The meeting was organised by Cr Jeff Johnson and attended by NSW Greens’ roads spokesperson, MLC Dr Mehreen Faruqi and Bob Higgins, Roads and Maritime Services’ (RMS) general manager for the Pacific Highway upgrade.

Protesters claim that the area earmarked for construction contains an environmentally significant population of koalas, important because they feed other colonies.

According to Cr Johnson, the decision made by the RMS is based purely on money.
