Zone B Youth of the Year Competition
The Zone B Youth of the Year Final was held on Saturday March 2 at the Anglican Church in Lennox Head. Considering the atrocious weather and the long distances some candidates had to travel, we were delighted that all 6 contestants managed to get to the venue safely. And what a talented bunch of young people they turned out to be! The finalists were Josh Davis from Lennox Head who won our local competition, (Thanks go to the judges Maree Somerville, Chloe Puglisi and Rob Blackburn for their efforts there), Maya Moses from Brunswick/ Mullumbimby, Brittany Bosse from Terranora Lakes, Poppi Meeves from Kingscliff, Jessica Whitlock from Tweed Coast South and Katie Paff from Coolangatta/Tweed. These finalists had to endure a half hour interview followed by two impromptu speeches. The whole process culminated with a 5 minute prepared speech on a topic of their choice. And what an amazing job they did.The standard was incredible and full marks must go to these students as well as their parents and schools who have supported them. I would like to have been a fly on the wall in the judges’ room during their deliberations. The task would not have been easy. Our sincere thanks go to these judges- Jon Sim, Justine Cox, Lisa Hecimovic, John Westaway and Bob Harper from NAB bank who once again sponsored the event.
The winner of the Public Speaking was Katie Paff and the 3 candidates selected to progress to the Regional Final were Maya Moses, Poppi Meeves and Brittany Bosse. Thanks go to Lion Don Hurley for another great event.
