Originally from Mullumbimby, artist Sharon McIlwain has lived in Lennox Head for 18 years and works from her home studio.
Always interested in drawing and making things, Sharon says she dabbled in drawing and painting throughout her 20s, but five years ago, began a Bachelor of Visual Arts, and is having her first exhibition in November.
Sharon’s work lays between realist and abstract art. She was inspired to create landscape paintings after completing a photography unit, and while she says she is not trying to replicate what she sees in the environment, her art is an interpretation through memory, experience, colour, shape, form and composition, and certainly evokes the strong feelings often triggered by the local environment.
The dates for Sharon’s upcoming exhibition at Northern Rivers Community Gallery, Ballina are 15 Nov – 17 Dec. The launch event is Thursday 16 November, 5.30pm – 7.30pm.
She will also have a two week Artist in Residence at Tweed Regional Art Gallery in 2018.
Sharon will be finishing her degree this time next year and will have a new body of work for the graduation exhibition at Southern Cross University.
She also exhibits her works at the monthly Bangalow market in Moller Pavilion.
