Last month North East Waste won a Local Government NSW Excellence in Environment Award for their Household Asbestos Testing Scheme. The program offers residents up to two samples per household for free testing to identify asbestos in their homes. Residents can access the program by presenting their rates notice at the Council.
‘It is important for home owners to understand whether their house contains asbestos so they can make an informed decision before carrying out renovations, particularly in the light of recent studies that show that 61% of all home owners who did their own home renovations experienced asbestos exposure during their renovations’, said Jeanie McKillop, Coordinator North East Waste.
Asbestos testing and disposal kits can be picked up from the Ballina Waste Management Facility, 167 Southern Cross Drive, Ballina.
