Dear Sarah, March 17

Dear Sarah,

We’ve just brought home a new puppy. We already have a dog at home who he will be socialising with – do we REALLY need to take him to puppy preschool?

Hi Belinda,

Short answer – YES! There are a number of reasons why Puppy Preschool is so important for your puppy to attend.

1. It helps build their self confidence and strengthens their bond with you. It’s really important that your puppy becomes confident within themselves, without always needing the other dog around. Run properly, Puppy Preschool can allow your puppy to experience things and make new friends in a safe environment. It also allows you to spend some one-on-one time with your new puppy, so that your puppy’s primary bond becomes you – and not the other dog.

2. Brush up on your knowledge. For some people, it’s been 10 or more years since they had a puppy in the house! If it’s been a while, it helps to brush up on some puppy care tips that you might have forgotten about. Also, information on best practice with regards to raising a puppy changes when new research comes in, so it’s always worth getting the most up to date information.

3. Spot potential problems early. Potential problematic behaviour requiring intervention can be spotted early. It’s also good to know what ‘normal’ behaviour is (‘yes, at 12 weeks of age it’s normal for her to be mouthing and chewing on everything’ vs ‘no, at 12 weeks of age, it’s not normal for him to try to attack you when you try to get him off the couch’). Getting help for certain behaviours when puppies are young often prevents them from escalating into something more serious as they get older.

4. Get started on some basic training. Puppy Preschool is a fun way to get your puppy started on some basic manners training that will carry them through for the rest of their lives.
