For the second year in a row, Peter Fowler has made the CPA Top 40 Under 40 list—a prestigious line up of high achieving CPAs, which is published in the professional magazine every year.

He insists, however, that while he is one of the youngest CPAs in Australia to become a partner (at just 26), he is very much part of a team. At Collins Hume in Ballina he is surrounded by a group of professionals who, just like himself, pride themselves on providing a special brand of holistic, strategic business advice. And it is that culture of striving for excellence that rubs off on them all.

For him the rewards come in the form of satisfaction in a job well done, nutting out solutions to complex problems, and receiving thanks for alleviating the stresses so often involved with running a business.

‘I guess the biggest compliment we can receive as an advisory business is in referrals, and we get plenty of those,’ says Peter.

So, what do Collins Hume do?

‘We provide a range of business advice to other businesses, and our clients range from sole traders right through to million dollar corporations,’ says Peter.

Collins Hume’s services include advice on wealth creation, taxation, superannuation, staff retention strategies, business modelling, planning for the future, and strategic planning. They also offer business coaching services and have developed a series of seminars designed to help businesspeople run their business better.

But, says Peter, their advice comes well tested. ‘We never recommend anything to a client that we haven’t tried in our own business first,’ he says.

‘We’re also very careful to be reasonable about the way we charge our clients—we don’t charge for simple emails or phone calls, because we believe in building ongoing relationships based on trust,’ he says.

And the firm has policies which ensure they give back. Collins Hume provides free advice to a selected number of not-for-profit organisations that make a difference to the wider community and discounts for others.

For this local boy, that kind of community connection will aways remain high on the priority list.
